Boondock Saints 3 in the works

boondock saintsDepending on your taste in films the news that a third Boondock Saints film is in the works will either greatly excite you or leave you cold. Me? I’m definitely in the first category.  The first film, released in 1999 was a sleeper hit notching up reasonable profits and a large cult following from home viewing. Anticipation for a sequel was dampened due to protracted legal issues being raised against the director Troy Duffy. When the second installment did surface some ten years after the first it was roundly panned in the press leading to a box office failure. As with the first it found it’s audience with home viewers .  Late last month actor Norman Reedus confirmed to IFC.com that he was meeting up with co-star Sean Patrick Flannery and Troy Duffy to discuss the third film. All are committed to making a third movie.  No news yet on any possible filming dates, release date or casting. Given that it took ten years between one and two it may be some time off. What is certain that the Saints will be marching in with all guns blazing.

The Gang’s All Here!

StarWarsThe gossip mill around Episode VII has been rolling pretty solidly this year.  We have the involvement of JJ Abrams and Harrison Ford confirming he’ll be back.  Now hot on the back of Carrie Fisher announcing that she would be reprising her role as Princess Leia in  George Lucas dropped this bit of info when he was interviewed by Businessweek.

“We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison—or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation. So I called them to say, ‘Look, this is what’s going on.’ He pauses. ‘Maybe I’m not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them.”

So it looks like Han, Leia and Luke will all be back with their Zimmer frames! I just hope it works as two of them are not renowned for their sanity in later years!

Anyway… This pretty much sums up my feelings:

James McAvoy to star in “The Crow” reboot?

UnknownDespite near universal opposition to it’s mere suggestion, The Crow reboot evades death like the film’s lead character. Fanboys flocked to the web in disgust when Mark Wahlberg was tipped to don the black and white face paint only for them to go apoplectic when Bradley Cooper was rumoured to star (an idea of how that would have looked can be found here). The film has had no shortage of big names attached with Ryan Gosling and Channing Tatum both mentioned in the past and now Bloody Disgusting has thrown James McAvoy’s name into the hat. It’s worth noting that the site first broke the news that Mark Wahlberg was linked to the project, and despite much skepticism and sneering aimed their way, the actor himself confirmed it. McAvoy is a great actor, and has proved his worth in comic book movies however the idea of casting anyone in the role made famous by the Brandon Lee is sacrilege to most.

News: Highlander remake developments

highlander 4Updates have come in regarding the long running saga that is  the remake of the Christopher Lambert fromage fest, Highlander. Initially with Ryan Reynolds signed up to play Conner MacLeod and director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 weeks later) on board, the project looked to be coming out of development hell and moving into a possible filming schedule. In December it was announced that Fresnadillo was no longer involved due to differences between himself and the studio over the creative vision of the project. The official line is that the film is still a priority and will be made under the supervision of another, as yet, un-named, director. In a piece of positive news Justin Lin is once again attached to the project. Initially touted as director prior to the appointment of Fresnadillo, Lin of Fast Five fame, is now on board in the capacity as an executive producer. With a track record of reviving a failing franchise Lin seems like a welcome addition to the team. Whether this proves to be the boost the project needs to move forward is debatable. A script has been getting developed during Fresnadillo’s tenure but no details have yet been released. Rumours of Ryan Reynolds using Mrs Doubtfire as a voice coach for that tricky Scottish accent are unconfirmed at this time.
